A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:
When the topic of Safety in Design is raised in a professional design environment, it typically triggers a series of thought processes, based on natural curiosity and resistances. We tend to want to first understand how a topic such as this fits into our larger view of contributing to our projects, our clients, our practices and our careers, before we will fully engage with it - and rightly so.
The training session introduced here, poses a series of questions to allow a progression through these thought processes and provide alternative ways to consider the topic of Safety in Design. There certainly is a better way forward - I have studied this topic for years and have very carefully crafted a training and process solution which I know will help you take Safety in Design from a place of BURDEN to a place of POSSIBILITY AND BENEFIT. - Jennekin |
TRAINING OUTLINE
PART 1
GROWING OUR UNDERSTANDING
QUESTION 1
WHO IS JENNEKIN AND WHY DOES SHE CARE SO MUCH ABOUT SAFETY IN DESIGN?
QUESTION 2
WHAT ARE THE PROBLEMS CURRENTLY BEING CAUSED BY OUR APPROACH TO THE LEGISLATED SAFETY IN DESIGN REQUIREMENTS?
[NO REGISTRATION CURRENTLY REQUIRED FOR THE VIDEO, REPORT OR PODCAST]
The above video is a short 'concept extract'.
You are invited to read the full report or listen to the full podcast below to learn more about the detail of problems currently being caused in our industry by our approach to Safety in Design.

QUESTION 3
AS DESIGNERS, HOW CAN WE BEST PROTECT OURSELVES FROM BEING SUED OR FACING CRIMINAL CHARGES?
Understanding this powerful yet surprisingly simple concept is critical to how we de-risk our design practices across various topics. If we can shift our fundamental approach to risk in this way, legislated Safety compliance (and other risk topics) can stop being a painful burden and much less of a risk to us in our design practices.

QUESTION 4
IS THE SAFETY IN DESIGN LEGISLATION UNFAIR OR ARE WE MISSING SOMETHING?
Many believe the legislation is asking us to create extra words for design safety responses which are for the most part already embedded in our design work, which makes it all seem like a rather unnecessary yet forced paperwork exercise. Many also believe that the legislation places an unfair and disproportionate burden on designers. There are in fact two misunderstandings at play here and it is high time we uncover these and allow ourselves to take a more positive path.

QUESTION 5
ARE WE WASTING OUR TIME OR IS THERE MORE TO THIS?
Compliance with Safety in Design legislation, IF approached a certain way, brings with it a series of unexpected and valuable benefits in areas particularly important to us as professional desigers.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE TOOLSET
QUESTION 6
HOW CAN WE STRUCTURE OUR PROCESS LOGICALLY?
A four step approach which underpins any good problem-solving process, plus relates easily to a project timeline.

QUESTION 7
WHAT ARE THE SAFETY IN DESIGN TASKS ON A PROJECT TIMELINE?
A detailed look at the various tasks on the project timeline which may be required to fully achieve compliance. These need not be onerous and if understood and approached in a certain way, will contribute to efficiencies and other benefits we would all welcome in our work day. (Overlayed with the above four step problem solving process).

QUESTION 8
WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT FROM A SAFETY IN DESIGN TEMPLATE SET?
As professional designers, we have to respond to an extensive range of variables in our work. How can it be possible for one Safety in Design template set to be useful on both small projects and complex/large projects without either taking too much time on a small project or not allowing thorough enough reviews on a complex project?
A look at the performance criteria necessary for a template set to achieve compliance and staff engagement - as was set for (and met by) the MIA Safety in Design process suite.
